Somali pirates relocate to southern Red Sea

AllVoice - Commodore Michiel Hijmans is the commander of NATO’s counter-piracy flotilla. There is only one thing that gives him sleepless nights: Somali pirates sailing and looting along the Horn of Africa. The Somalia pirates have continued their marauding activities; consequently, Commodore Hijmans is living a nightmare.

Nevertheless, NATO has had some success in countering the Somali pirates according to analysts in Toronto. A multinational force in Gulf of Aden consisting of patrols from India, China, Russia, Europe, and the United States has been able to force the Somali pirates to relocate to the southern Red Sea. There is no word yet on whether the Somali pirates appreciate the hot and humid climate of their new locale or whether they prefer the tropical climate of their homeland.

The United Nations Security Council has given foreign navies approval to counter pirates in Somalia’s territorial waters; however, they do not have the authority to chase the Somalia pirates into the territorial waters of Eritrea or Yemen. Were foreign navies to venture into Eritrean or Yemeni territorial waters without prior approval, they would likely be labeled pirates by the respective governments of those nations. In that case, Eritrea and Yemen may have no other choice but to assemble a Somali counter-piracy force to take on the NATO pirates.
